Wyeth Research & Pharmaceutical Product Development
As a global company, Wyeth serves the health needs of people around the world. Meeting those needs requires thousands of dedicated scientists and committed financial resources. In 2007 alone, Wyeth spent approximately $3.3 billion on research and development, with an emphasis on pharmaceutical, vaccine and biotechnology treatments.

Wyeth researchers devote much of their time and energy to discovering and developing products in specialized therapeutic areas, including women's health, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, clotting disorders, infectious disease, neuroscience, and oncology, as well as to developing vaccines and nutritionals.
Pharmaceutical R&D operations at Wyeth are divided into two basic units —discovery and development. Discovery is directed toward both new chemical entities and new biological entities. Development activities include: chemical, biological and pharmaceutical development; drug safety and metabolism; clinical research and development; and medical affairs. These activities provide the necessary data for the drug approval process conducted in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). For more information about clinical trials across the United States, and about recently approved drug therapies, visit CenterWatch.
Wyeth Research also is committed to the discovery and development of vaccines that can prevent significant life-threatening diseases. Vaccine R&D activities are directed toward diseases of both bacterial and viral origin in areas of respiratory illness, sexually transmitted diseases and gastrointestinal disease.
As a worldwide leader in women's health care, Wyeth created the Women's Health Research Institute in 1993 to centralize and expand the company's efforts in women's health care discovery, clinical research and strategic global research alliances. This is the only institute in the pharmaceutical industry that is dedicated solely to research in women's health. It includes state-of-the-art laboratories dedicated to the identification of new products for the future, such as new steroids, nonsteroidal molecules and nonhormonal targets. The Institute also cooperates with major professional and public organizations to encourage a continuing emphasis in the world community on the health care issues that uniquely affect women.
